Orientation for Orientators

by Evelyn Lopez

With the completion of the first draft of my Orientation lesson plan, I am now going to help orientate new and past instructors to our new education plan.

To do this, I will be walking instructors through the Presentation and Lesson Plan created.

I will be holding "Orientation Orientation" this coming Friday (June 5th) and Sunday (June 7th) at 3:00pm. Possibly extending it to the following week as well.

Meet-a-Geek: Emil

by Evelyn Lopez

Here at FreeGeek Chicago we love our volunteers. They are the reason we are still operating and their dedication makes our lives a lot easier. With that in mind, we have created a segment on our website we like to call Meet-a-Geek. In this segment we will feature one of our volunteers every month. We hope you get to know them as we have.

This month we say hello to our volunteer Emil M.

Crime & Punishment Release Party

by James Slater

FreeGeek Chicago will host a Release Party this Saturday, July 19th from 2-4p for the Crime and Punishment Project, a guide to the known and unknown data of Chicago's criminal justice system. This project was developed in partnership the SmartChicago Collaborative and the Chicago Justice Project, who will be on-hand to answer questions about the project's goals and it's status. Plus we'll have pizza. Full event info and RSVP are available on the Eventbrite Page.

This event is free and open to all. If you are a Journalist, Researcher, or Community Member interested in the criminal justice system we encourage you to attend. If you are a Hacker or Up-and-coming Hacker that is interested in OpenGov, OpenData, and web apps, we encourage you to attend. And of course if you are a FreeGeeker, you should definitely be there!

What is the Crime and Punishment Project

The Crime and Punishment Project is set up to allow you to follow a case as it would normally proceed through the justice system starting with a victimization in Chicago then moving through the Cook County system and completing its journey with the Illinois Department of Corrections. This is a flat data site that community members, journalists, and policymakers can use to learn about what data is and is not available from their justice agencies.

Take a look online.
